FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

I am Jagnarayan Shah from Village Amelia, Post Karsualal, Tehsil Mada, Districit Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, and I have been an active member of Mahan Sabgharsh Samiti.  Since past four years, Mahan Sangharsh Samiti’s has been fighting to save our jal, jagal, jameen to secure the livelihood. Our constant fight to save our pristine forest has resulted in the de-allocation of the Mahan coal block. MSS has been fighting for over four years to implement the Community Forest Right. Finally the incessant hard work had paid off and Independence day, the Community Forest Right has been passed in Gramshabha with full majority. Henceforth, before using the natural resources for commercial use a prior permission needs to be taken with Gram Sabha. It is an important victory for us and we hope that MSS will continue to work to save our forest and right.

Jagnarayan Shah (Village Amelia, Post Karsualal, Tehsil Mada, Dist- Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh)

Healthy environment is the sign of a healthy nation. Greenpeace India is a credible organization working towards to preserve and save our pristine forests and providing sustainable energy solution. The recent clampdown by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Greenpeace India by blocking its bank accounts and suspending its registration is appalling. I request to Home Minister Rajnath Singh to revoke this order so that Greenpeace can continue to work for our environment.

People’s Victory for Mahan, Environment Ministry declares Mahan; A NoGo zone for mining

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Greeting I am Vivek Goyal and welcome to Radio Sangharsh. There is a good news to the listners, one of the oldest sal forest of Aisa has been in controversy and discussion because of strong opposition from local community against coal mining. According to the Government document acquired by Greenpeace’s RTI the Mahan coal block may not be put on auction as it falls in ‘inviolate forests’. Despite getting the Stage II Forest Clarence mining has not begun in Mahan. This is the third time when the Environment Ministry has told the Coal Ministry to deny permission to mine Mahan.
The decision represents a huge victory for the people of Mahan and Greenpeace. If Mahan is inviolate, it also has implications for other blocks in the region like Chhatrasal and Dongrital. This is people’s victory!!

The People Have Spoken: Development Without Destruction

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

My name is Vivek and I am speaking from Delhi right now. Today the serious danger of climate change is hovering over the entire world. The whole world is readying itself to fight this danger. On December 20, 2014, 350.org organized People’s climate march in which various organizations from across the country participated and raised their voices against the serious issue of climate change. From Mandi House to Jantar Mantar almost 1500 youth, women, men and children marched. The march was divided into 3 sections- the first section were people who wore black t-shirts and symbolized reasons, next- the ones who wore blue t-shirts symbolized impacts, and the third wearing yellow t-shirts symbolized solutions. Organizations such as Chutka Nuclear Energy Sangharsh Samiti, Mahan Sangharsh Samiti etc participated in the march. An activist from Mahan Sangharsh Samiti, Siyaram Shah said that the government is destroying forests without any basis because of which the climate is impacted. Besides, the destruction of forests is causing the loss of livelihoods for lakhs of people and also serious causing changes to the air and water thereby affecting crores of people. We have already seen the impact of climate change in Uttarakhand and in Kashmir. I appeal to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Climate Change Conference in New York along with the Environment Minister, Prakash Javdekar. The organization of the People Climate March has been successful. The enthusiasm of the people participating in this march has made it clear that people don’t want development that is built on the foundations of destruction.

We Welcome the Supreme Court Verdict

JAG NARAYAN SHAH (Amelia village, Karsualal post, Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh)

“I am a member of Mahan Sangharsh Samiti. We are the ones who are pursuing a peaceful revolution to save their water, jungle, land, livelihoods and daily bread. Friends, we welcome the the Supreme Court decision on Aug 25, 2014 that declares coal block allocations from 1993 to 2011, a total of 216 coal blocks as illegal! Through this we realised that the truth can get upset but cannot be defeated.
I hope through this Supreme Court decision that all the illegal coal blocks in the country get shut down and this would be beneficial to all the people living in this country. And through this, the violation of human rights of children, women and people around the country that is happening currently–  can be stopped and their situation can be improved so that people can better their lives together. Friends, zindabad!”

2013 Gram Sabha Should be Declared Invalid

“I want to give this message through Radio Sangharsh that the Gram Sabha that was held on March 6, 2013 in a wrong and forged manner, be declared invalid. A new Gram Sabha should be held again in the presence of district judge or such higher administrators, so that we villagers can independently and peacefully put forth our matters. It needs to be ensured that there is no pressure on the villagers during this.

I appeal to all my friends of Radio Sangharsh that the forged Gram Sabha be declared invalid and those who carried out the forgeries be handed out strict punishments. Thank you. Zindabad!”

Dirty Tactics employed by those scared of public dissent against forest destruction

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

“I am Priya Pillai, a Mahan Sangharsh Samiti worker speaking from Singrauli district’s Mahan area. You might be surprised to know that fictitious letters are being circulated in my name among people and the media. I am not connected in any way with these letters. These false letters are notifying the people and the administration that if the Rakhi festival celebration is not successful, then violence should be employed. This is while Greenpeace and Mahan Sangharsh Samiti don’t believe in violence of any kind. It’s evident from these kinds of incidents that the company is running scared and have stopped down to dirty tactics which is deplorable. We have filed a case in the police station against this and demand that the people involved in this be punished in the strictest manner possible. Zindabad!”

Villagers boycotted – compensation process without implementation of community forest rights

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Jagnaryan Shah (Village Amelia, Post Karsualal, Tehsil Mada, Dist- Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh).

From 17 July 2014, the Company and Government are jointly distributing notice regarding the Mahua trees in the forest. In the name of this notice, Govt officials – Patwari, RI and Forest Munshi are luring the people. This notice says, ‘you collect produces from Mahua trees which are now under the area allocated to Mahan Coal Ltd. So, we declare xyz number of Mahua trees in your name as compensation.’ Tehsildar had sent this notice to us stating anyone having objections regarding this would need to raise so by 26 July.
So, today being 26th July, 575 villagers gathered at the Community Hall to submit memorandum of their opposition to this notice to the Govt officials. The 575 of us strongly opposed the notice and said, ‘because the Community Forest Rights hasn’t yet been implemented for people in Mahan; we don’t accept any such notices before that!’
I request the listeners of Radio Sangharsh to keep on supporting our fight, take it to different levels and save Mahan forest together.”

Collector met Mahan villagers, announced Gramsabha to decide the future of the forest

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Hardayal Singh Gond (Vil. Amelia, Dst. Singrauli, MadhyaPradesh):

“On 21st July 2014, District Magistrate (Collector) of Singrauli invited Mahan Sangharsh Samiti (MSS) and Mahan Vikas Manch to discuss what the villagers want regarding the forest and mining. Collector told the villagers that they could get ‘mouza’ somewhere in the forest area and compensation. But, we from MSS cleared our stand on forest and rights. We told the collector that until in a Gramsabha we get our Community Forest Rights implemented under the Forest Rights Act 2006; we won’t let any company work in the forest, we don’t want any compensation against the forest.
Collector finally said that we could only come to a decision on this through a Gramsabha. In the Gramsabha, whichever side (forest or mining) the majority of villagers would take, would determine the future of Mahan.”

Jagnarayan Shah, a member of Mahan Sangharsh Samiti with hope of justice from the new government, conveys this message to the Prime Minister, Union Tribal Minister and the Tribal welfare department :
“ I am a resident of Mahaan forest area. The forest is the only source of  livelihood of the people residing here. It gives us Mahua, Tendu, Chironji, wood for cooking and supporting village huts, different herbs, medicines etc. making the villagers self-sufficient and with all the resources required for living. But Essar, Hindalco, Mahan Coal Limited and other corporations are trying to snatch it from the people. Bribed local administrators are thrashing villager’s rights everyday. Here, the Community Forest Rights hasn’t been implemented. Social workers and other villagers who try to protect these people’s rights are thrown to jail on the basis fake cases.
We are fighting non-violently to save our forest and we will keep on fighting for it because if it is wiped deforested, we will lose everything.
