Exploitation of Wage Workers

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

I am Vidhya Chanran Mishra from Village Suhira, Post Karsualal, Tehsil Mada, District Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. I have worked Essar Power in Badhora, Singrauli for six months and left in distress. Though my working hours were eight hours per day but I regularly worked for twelve hours and I was paid around 6,000 on the basis of eight hours. I have never been paid overtime. I have raised this issue and also given in writing seeking my compensation for extra time but it’s of no use. As evidence, I have the photocopy of the gate pass which can establish the number of hours that I had put in at work. They also exploit their workers by paying less money than the government fixed standard. The workers are paid Rs 150-160 for 8 hours where in the government fixed wage is Rs 300 for 8 hours. This is my request and appeal to the listeners of Radio Sangharsh, that this project must be shut down and proper wage compensation has to be made to all the workers.

Right to Food Violation!

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Lallu Prasad Shah from Village Suhira, Post Karsualal, Tehsil Mada, District Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh; Its shocking to see how the Sarpanch and the Secretary are making money out of people’s hunger. It’s found that our Sarpanch and Secretary are selling the allotted food and oil in black. At times they do even use it for their own consumption, leaving the poor villagers in distress and helpless. The food grains and oil are allotted to the locals by the government at a subsidised rate and such scandal is causing chaos among us. Hence, I am requesting the listener of Radio Sangharsh to help us raising this with the higher authorities.

Ration Shop owner’s atrocities and corruption in Budher

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Anita Kushwaha (Village Budher, Post Jamghadi, Tehsil Sarai, Dist- Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh):
“Budher village’s Ration Shop owner doesn’t give us ration following norms. And when he gives, he does the wrong entry on ration card so that he can blackmarket the rations. I went to take kerosene but he refused to give and said, “your name is not on the slip. It is my choice whether I’ll give or not.”
Laxmi Devi Saket, a lady from Barvatola came to get her ration. 35Kg was written on her slip; but the ration shop owner told her that she could only take 5Kg! She protested saying why should she take 5kg when 35Kg is written on her slip. As a result, the angry Ration shop owner started beating her.

On 24 Oct. 2104 Friday around 9 p.m., Heeralal (s/o Ramlakhan Shah) and Chandrika (s/o Heeralal Shah) have murdered my son and threw his dead body in the well.

Medieval India? Budher’s Sarpanch takes villager’ signatures on blank paper during gramsabha

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Anita Kushwaha (Village Budher, Post Jamghadi, Tehsil Sarai, Dist- Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh):

“Gramsabha has been organized on 3rd Oct 2014 in my Budher village. But the Sarpanch and Village Secretary did not write anything on proposal letter and they didn’t even inform all the villagers. I asked the Sarpanch and Secretary when’s the date for next GramSabha, yet didn’t get any answer from them.
On that day, I was passing by the village school and found that GramSabha was going on. I asked the secretary, “What’s written in the gramsabha proposal?” He told, “Nothing is written yet, I’ll write once I go home!” I demanded that the proposal must be written in the GramSabha and not in anyone’s home. But as usual, they didn’t tell anything.
After all these, they started taking signatures on a blank paper! I said that I wouldn’t sign on a blank paper.

Repeal the Proposed Dilution of FRA

ANITA KUSHWAHA (village Budher, Post – Jamghadi, Thana Sarai, Tehsil Sarai, Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh):

“We have been dependent on the jungle since generations. Therefore, the right to the forests first belongs to the people who live here. I have heard that the government is trying to bring in a new law. According to the new law they wish, to set up a coal mine or an commercial industry, it will not be necessary to get the consent of the villagers. If this law is brought in, it is a violation of our fundamental rights as well as the rights of the people living in the forests. I will not obey this law because it will destroy the livelihoods of the people who depend on the forests and we will all be displaced from our homes. So, this law has to be stopped immediately. I appeal to my friends around the country that this law which the government is trying to impose is wrong because the coal reserves of the country will be destroyed completely because of this.”

Diluting FRA is A Violation of Fundamental Rights

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

JAG NARAYAN SHAH (Amelia village, Thana and Tehsil Mahda, Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh) :

“I am a Mahan Sangharsh Samiti activist. I am an independent citizen of India. I have heard though newspapers and news that the attempt by the government to dilute the Forest Rights Act and not give the Gram Sabha any importance is being discussed. If it happens, it won’t be necessary to enforce forests rights laws and to obtain consent in the Gram Sabha before allocating coal blocks. This is a violation of the rights of all the people in India! The laws guarantee rights under the Constitution to every person because of which the citizens of the country are able to progress. I want to state that since generations for us the source of livelihood are the forests of Mahan, in which the forest produce is non-taxable. The people for whom the forests are a source of livelihood they have the first right to the forests. It would not be right to carry out any activity in the forests without their consent and it would also be a violation of their rights. To interfere with this, would be a violation of people’s rights.
Before the elections, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that good days are here. But it seems from reports in the newspapers that people who live in forest areas, who have their livelihoods there, it seems like their lives are in danger. This is a violation of the rights of Indian citizens. If rights are violated in this manner, then we will fight to save our rights and our livelihoods ourselves and I appeal to the friends listening to Radio Sangharsh, to try hard to save the livelihoods and daily bread of fellow Indian citizens. Thank you!”

First thing’s first! Implement community forest rights

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

BHAGWAN ASHRAY NAMDEV (Village Raila, Tehsil Mada, Dist-Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh)

“There are many problems in our district like power cut, electric transformer doesn’t change on time etc. but here I’ll talk about the need of Forest Right Implementation in our district. Administration stated that villagers who have been living here since 1984, will get the land registration; but I would also like to suggest that we should start Forest Right Awareness drive among poor and displaced people of singrauli. There are rights for everyone. We have to understand our rights.
I am appealing to the new district magistrate that villagers should be benefited. Forest is about to finish in next 10 years. Before that, those villagers should get their rights in place and only after that, the GramSabha should be organized!”

We Welcome the Supreme Court Verdict

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

JAG NARAYAN SHAH (Amelia village, Karsualal post, Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh)

“I am a member of Mahan Sangharsh Samiti. We are the ones who are pursuing a peaceful revolution to save their water, jungle, land, livelihoods and daily bread. Friends, we welcome the the Supreme Court decision on Aug 25, 2014 that declares coal block allocations from 1993 to 2011, a total of 216 coal blocks as illegal! Through this we realised that the truth can get upset but cannot be defeated.
I hope through this Supreme Court decision that all the illegal coal blocks in the country get shut down and this would be beneficial to all the people living in this country. And through this, the violation of human rights of children, women and people around the country that is happening currently–  can be stopped and their situation can be improved so that people can better their lives together. Friends, zindabad!”

Demand For a Free & Fair Gram Sabha

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Young activist Rambhor Yadav (from Amelia village), interviewed by Vivek Goyal (Radio Sangharsh team)-

Vivek (V): Hello friends! I’m Vivek, standing in Amelia village right now. As you all know, the administration has set a date for the new Gram Sabha to be held here. Right now Rambhor Yadav is with me, a young activist with Mahan Sangharsh Samiti who is constantly working to save the forests so that his livelihood can be saved. Let’s speak to Rambhor and find out what his thoughts are about the Gram Sabha.
Rambhor (R): Friends! I wish that the Gram Sabha is held in a peaceful and legal manner. In this Gram Sabha to be held between 16-23 Aug, my forest rights should be given to me. In this Gram Sabha, we must get our community forest rights.
V : Rambhor ji, tell us about the irregularities and wrongdoings in the previous Gram Sabha and the reasons that made it invalid.
R : In that Gram Sabha, 184 people were present. After the Gram Sabha was over, at midnight, people went about from house to house getting signatures forged. The Police Inspector at that time went about and got signatures forged. The 1125 signatures that was eventually listed they are all forged. I oppose this.
V : Thank you Ram Bhavar. As you just heard the previous Gram Sabha that took place, there were many forgeries in it. There were only about 184 people present in it and later it was made 1125. This is completely wrong and I too oppose it and I hope that the new Gram Sabha that is going to take place gives the villagers here their rights.

“ We are against the proposed coal extraction plan in the Mahan forests. This forest is the sustaining force of all life forms in and around it and our only source of livelihood for 62 villages!
We are facing severe hostility because of the opposition we are posing to the mining project. The company brokers are people from our village only. They frequently keep threatening us with slapping us with false charges (mainly using article 376 of the IPC, besides others)! Only recently they got four few of our fellow activists (Bechanlal, Vijay Shankar Singh, Akshay Gupta, Vineet Gupta) arrested on false charges. Eventually we got them released on bail. ‘Development’, who do you serve? Not us, for sure!

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

JAGNARAYAN (Mahan Sangharsh Samiti member) from AMELIA, SINGRAULI, MADHYA PRADESH -
“We heard about the IB report from media. I reject the report’s allegation that  Greenpeace is a hindrance to our economic growth, as false! Development means progress that is for all!

Right now in India, the word ‘development’ only helps businessmen and city dwellers to ‘grow’ more. But it is us, the village dwellers, who have to deal with the ugly side to it. We get displaced and have no where to go, our livelihoods are snatched away from us, we are expected to make life changing sacrifices! After losing everything, we have to live with dust, unbearable pollution, a destroyed environment resulting in adverse health effects on our fellow villagers.

Our rights and needs are ruthlessly trampled over. In this environment of despair, Greenpeace has been supporting and working to enforce community forest rights on Mahan forest for the villagers. This is as per 2006-2007 Forest Rights Act.
There is necessity for organisations like Greenpeace in our co- to spread awareness, safeguard the rights and livelihood of us poor, to protect the environment from destruction. Greenpeace is not one to function for money or political motives. They are doing a great job”

Appeal to the PMO for “acche din” in Mahan

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Jagnarayan Shah, a member of Mahan Sangharsh Samiti with hope of justice from the new government, conveys this message to the Prime Minister, Union Tribal Minister and the Tribal welfare department :
“ I am a resident of Mahaan forest area. The forest is the only source of  livelihood of the people residing here. It gives us Mahua, Tendu, Chironji, wood for cooking and supporting village huts, different herbs, medicines etc. making the villagers self-sufficient and with all the resources required for living. But Essar, Hindalco, Mahan Coal Limited and other corporations are trying to snatch it from the people. Bribed local administrators are thrashing villager’s rights everyday. Here, the Community Forest Rights hasn’t been implemented. Social workers and other villagers who try to protect these people’s rights are thrown to jail on the basis fake cases.
We are fighting non-violently to save our forest and we will keep on fighting for it because if it is wiped deforested, we will lose everything.
I appeal to the new Government to make these companies evacuate the forest so that we could live peacefully, ‘jisse hum sabke acche din baney rahen’. And I don’t only hope but believe it strongly that you (the government), keeping in view- the livelihood of the Mahan people, will make the companies leave Mahan. Zindabad!”

Officer from Union Bank of India is asking for bribe from poor people in Bargawan

FacebookStumbleUponGoogle+TwitterEmail

Ramkripal Gurjar (resident of Bargawan) was supposed to get Rs. 60000 under Pradhan Mantri Housing Scheme. He received half the total sum (i.e. Rs. 30000) as the first installment and was supposed to get another half after the completion of his house.
After the construction was done, on 25 September 2013, he applied for the 2nd installment with the photos of completed house to his bank- Union Bank of India. Then Debvrat, the field officer of the bank demanded from him a bribe of Rs. 5000 in order to allow the second installment. Ramkripal refused to pay any bribe. As a result, the corrupt officer Debvrat didn’t accept his photos and application for the 2nd installment.
After this incidence, he went many times to the bank but he wasn’t given his second installment. On 1st march 2014 when he went to Debvrat, he said “remove the windows and doors from house only then you will get it.” Ramkripal refused to do this as well and said, “I’ve constructed this house for staying, I’ll not remove windows and doors!”  Also, he did not get the details of his account for nine months, after 9 months when he got the details, he found out that he was charged with an interest of Rs. 5700 of which he has no idea! He says he was tortured mentally, and economically. Ramkripal filed a case to the collector and demands for justice! #unionbankofindia
